EU to Reinstate Pre-War Tariffs on Ukrainian Farm Imports

The European Union is preparing to roll back wartime trade concessions for Ukrainian agricultural products, signaling a return to pre-conflict import restrictions. Draft documents reveal Brussels plans to reinstate tariff quotas on wheat, maize, eggs, and meat as early as June—a MOVE that follows mounting pressure from EU member states facing domestic farmer protests.

France and Poland have emerged as vocal proponents of stricter controls, reflecting growing tensions between wartime solidarity and economic self-interest. The proposed measures WOULD effectively terminate the "autonomous trade measures" implemented in 2022 to support Ukraine’s agricultural sector after Russia’s invasion.

This policy reversal comes as the EU grapples with balancing humanitarian support for Ukraine against the need to protect its internal markets. The expiration of tariff waivers marks a significant shift in Europe’s economic response to the conflict, potentially creating headwinds for Ukraine’s agricultural exports.
